Did you know that the way we talk about math at home can have a powerful impact on how our children feel about learning math? At Afflerbach Elementary, we want every student to believe they are capable of becoming a successful mathematician. One of the easiest ways families can support this goal is through positive math talk!
Sometimes, without realizing it, adults say things like, "I was never good at math," or "Math is just too hard." Although these comments may seem harmless, children can begin to believe that being good at math is something you are born with rather than something you develop through practice, effort, and perseverance.
Instead, let's help our Mustangs develop a growth mindset by encouraging them to think, explore, make mistakes, and try different strategies.
Five Ways to Encourage Positive Math Talk at Home
- Replace "I'm not good at math" with "I'm still learning!" Remind your child that everyone can improve their math skills with practice and effort.
- Ask "How did you figure that out?" Rather than focusing only on the correct answer, encourage your child to explain their thinking. This helps build deeper understanding and confidence.
- Celebrate mistakes! Mistakes are an important part of learning. Try saying, "That's an interesting way to think about it. What could we try differently?"
- Make math part of everyday life. Have your child help measure ingredients while cooking, estimate the grocery bill, count change, or figure out how much time is left before dinner. Math is everywhere!
- Praise effort and problem-solving. Instead of saying, "You're so smart!" try, "I love how you kept trying different strategies until you figured it out!" This reinforces the importance of perseverance.
Working Together to Build Strong Mathematicians
At Afflerbach, our teachers are working hard to strengthen math instruction, provide meaningful feedback, and help students understand their progress. Families play an equally important role in building the confidence and positive attitudes that support student success.
Our November family challenge: Find one opportunity each day to have a positive math conversation with your child. It doesn't have to involve homework! A simple question such as "How do you know?" or "Is there another way to solve that?" can make a big difference.
Thank you for being our partners in helping every Mustang grow academically and develop a love of learning. Remember, we don't have to be perfect at math to be successful—we just have to be willing to learn!
