District Initiatives 2003-2004
North Central Accreditation (NCA)
Continued improvement is a theme employees across Laramie County School District 1 have taken to heart this year as the district is aligning its efforts with a new mission statement, core values and goals.
The three new elements are a result of the district-wide North Central Association accreditation process. The components were developed through community and district-wide input.
Accreditation is typically achieved at the school level; however, last fall LCSD1 became one of the first districts in the nation to achieve NCA accreditation. Accreditation takes five years and once it is achieved, a school or district must begin the process again. Thus, LCSD1 is nearly one year into the new process.
In March, LCSD1 hosted a community meeting inviting a diverse group of more than 70 people to pore over the district’s facts and figures. Everything from test scores to enrollment figures and anything in between was subject to intense scrutiny as participants worked to identify strengths, weaknesses and develop ideas on areas for improvement.
As the implementation process begins with steering teams formed to focus on the three goal areas of math, reading and writing, another unique activity held in June brings the process to life visually.
During a visioning activity, members of the district’s art department listened while community and district representatives discussed the new goals, mission and core values. Based on their comments about the district’s vision, artist Chad Blakely designed a new graphic version of the LCSD1 vision statement.
- Mission Statement
Due to these efforts the new mission statement reads: The mission of Laramie County School District 1 in cooperation with students, parents, staff and the community is to provide a high quality education in a safe and orderly environment for all students, inspiring them to become life-long learners and responsible, productive citizens. - Goals
Through the NCA process, the following goals have been established: All students will improve in reading comprehension, math problem solving and writing across the content areas.
Completion Rate Plan
The LCSD1 Board of Trustees revised the completion rate plan last year. The plan serves as a guide for the district to meet its goals and is designed for everyone to see and understand the district/school improvement process. It was developed through broad community input with focus on at-risk, math and staff development.
The completion rate plan addresses all levels of instruction, K-12 with timelines driven by needs from each curriculum content area. It is the tool that sets the priorities of the district including instruction, the budget and new construction and renovations based on a five-year plan. (See chart below)
